Sex Workers’ Opera Breaks Through Stigmas

Gepubliceerd: 03 juli 2018 Datum 21 juli 2018 tot en met 03 augustus 2018

The Sex Workers’ Opera from England premieres 21 July at the Compagnietheater in Amsterdam. In this show, sex workers and their friends break through stigmas and stereotypes surrounding the world’s oldest profession. The Compagnietheater is the first international venue for the opera, which will be performed during the period of the 22nd International AIDS Conference and Amsterdam Pride.

What do you think when you hear words like

  • “stripper,” “escort,” or “pornstar”?
  • A sex worker who gives marriage advice...
  • Two sisters in a fight about their feminist values...
  • A mother who makes career choices in a world dominated by men...

Whether you want to save us or judge us, whether you’re in the mood for us or feel sympathy for us... you are invited for a diverse evening of music from opera to hip-hopera and from modern dance to pole dancing. Sex workers take to the stage to tell their own stories in their own words. The opera gives audiences a fully candid, in-depth yet uplifting glimpse behind the scenes of sex work. Stories from 17 countries from all over the world are interwoven into the show.
